Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret needs BOTH upper canines extracted
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi everyone, I have a 4 yo male ferret, River, who needs to have both of his upper canines extracted. When I adopted him 2 years ago, one of his canines had a broken tip, and was an offwhitish color. Vet said wait to have it removed. Each time he had been to the vets (and he has seen 3 different vets for different reasons), I had them look at it... ALL vets he had seen, said to wait... and throughout the 2 years I've had him and when the Vets have looked at his tooth, the color has changed from offwhite to yellowish. And now that first canine is completely discolored yellowish now. And just recently, his second upper canine is starting to become discolored also... about 1/2 way down from the gum line. Vet now says they have learned more about ferret dental issues, and that both teeth should come out now.

I have read over the archives (I'm a little upset that none of the vets never mentioned the option of a root canal to fix this before it became a problem, but...) I read the that having an upper canine removed poses the risk of leaving a hole inbetween the oral and nasal cavities and this could be prone to infection. Will this hole eventually close on its own? I did read that the Vet should close the hole with the gums, but I mean the hole itself, will that cause any problems for him, esp since both canines need to come out? Also I read that the upper canines keep the lips out of the way of the other teeth... should this esp be a problem for him since both canines are to come out? Has anyone ever had a ferret with 2 canines removed? What problems can I anticipate from this procedure, if any?

I'm also confused as to why the 2nd canine is becoming discolored? I feel really bad for him that 2 canines need to come out now. I cant see any break in it. He is not caged, so its not from biting the cage bars.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, as I've never had a ferret need to go thru this... never mind one tooth extracted - but 2 of them.

Thanks,
Andrea and River
