Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Ferret needs BOTH upper canines extracted
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Andrea,

I really question your vets if this is just a color or staining issue!

Many dental surgeries can leave ferrets depressed . If surgery is required then the upper jaw is much better than the lower jaw. HOWEVER yellowing is a sign of aging. Ther tooth enamels do change color as the ferret gets older. It goes form Bright white to a slight translucent white to a yellow adn sometimes even a grey in ferrets 8 years & up.

Now if the tooth is turning a visable brown / or black in color that demnotes nerve damge and may require extraction. BUT NOT IN ALL CASES! I have a kid who's tooth on lower jaw broke below the gum line. There is black there and occassionally we run her on a course of antibiotics because the vet is fearful that extraction could result in a broken jaw. If that is what this is ( tartar buildup) it can easily be removed without tooth extraction.

Make sure what you are seeing is tooth and not a biuild up of tartar or placque!
Is there a gum onfrection or ulcer? That would need to be treated first before extracction to lower the posibility oof infection getting into the blood stream. Oral surgery easily can cause bacteria to get into the system.

Best Wishes
