Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Ferret needs BOTH upper canines extracted
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Andrea, I didn't see you mention anywhere that the teeth are bothering him. I've had ferrets with badly broken and/or discolored teeth that never needed them removed. Is there inflammation at the gumline? Is he still eating?

My experience has been that if a ferret's teeth are bothering them, they will stop eating as much and start loosing weight. Even then, antibiotics can often be all that is needed.

I have had ferrets that needed teeth removed, but I would be reluctant to remove a canine unless it was noticably causing problems, and not just cosmetic or aging discoloration.

Watch him closely to see if they are bothering him when he eats or if he is losing weight. If not, I would tend to leave well enough alone.

When I adopted him 2 years ago, one of his canines had a broken tip, and was an offwhitish color. Vet said wait to have it removed. ... And just recently, his second upper canine is starting to become discolored also... about 1/2 way down from the gum line. Vet now says they have learned more about ferret dental issues, and that both teeth should come out now.
