Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Prostate Problems
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have not heard that saw palmetto might have led to Propecia; I think that=
may need checking. There have been multiple herbal approaches used world-=
wide, though I confess to not following them or setting them to memory I ha=
ve heard of some so if there is a phytochemical origin for that med it migh=
t not be saw palmetto.

Even among humans the effect of saw palmetto is thought to be only modest a=
t best. =

For a ferret, given the risk of hydronephrosis and death from a blockage, u=
sing something weak like saw palmetto might be a bad move.

For ferrets with enlarged prostates:

Lupron
Melatonin implant
Proscar/Propecia
Casodex is an alternative
Flomax is sometimes used

There may be other things to help. Look up related posts by AFERRETVET in =
the FHL archives. Addy is in my sig lines.

Saw palmetto and lower urinary tract symptoms: what is the latest evidence?=

The use of dietary supplements for treating a wide range of health conditio=
ns has grown rapidly in the United States. In the field of men's health, th=
e most common dietary supplement used is an extract of the berry of the saw=
palmetto plant, with which men commonly self-medicate in order to treat lo=
wer urinary tract symptoms. Throughout the past two decades, substantial li=
terature has emerged examining the biologic and clinical effects of saw pal=
metto extracts. Several lines of evidence suggest that saw palmetto may exe=
rt physiologic effects consistent with a beneficial clinical effect on the =
mechanisms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Although most clinical studies =
tend to suggest a modest efficacy benefit of saw palmetto, more recent stud=
ies are less consistent and the precise clinical value of saw palmetto for =
treating lower urinary tract symptoms remains undefined. Overall, there app=
ear to be few safety concerns with short-term use of this herbal medicine, =
although large-scale and longer-term safety studies have not been performed=
. Higher-quality studies are currently underway to better define the potent=
ial benefits and risks of plant-based extracts for treating symptoms relate=
d to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Here is a small, very short term study done after saw palmetto was called i=
nto question in relation to one case of liver toxicosis:

More study would be needed but that particular rat one did not find such li=
ver problems.

etc.
