It really sounds to me like burns. There is a microwavable disc marketed to veterinarians designed to maintain a sick animal's body temperature. They lay it under blankets or towels. You would not see it, and if you didn't know it was there, you'ld never suspect your ferret was on a heat source.

While generally safe (my vet used one during surgeries for 4-5 years with no problem), IF someone microwaved it for longer than the recommended 5 minutes OR if they didn't cover it with enough toweling or padding, it can produce enough heat to give thermal burns.

The burns might not show up right away, depending on how severe the injury is. Also, if the fur is thick, the burns might be very difficult to see. After a week or so, the area will take on a leathery feel and a greenish tint, likely due to infection, and a thick scab will form. If only a minor burn, it might just be red and a thin scab form.

If your ferret has burns from one of these discs, you can expect to find one on the center of the back, and one on each outside 'thigh' where the legs lay spread on the heat source.

It can take 3 months or more for these burns to heal, as the scab will fall off and a new one form, each smaller than the previous as the wound heals from the outside perimeter to the center.

Ferrets with thermal burns should be on an antibiotic and a topical medication such as Tresaderm should be used to aid healing.

I have photos if anyone is interested.
