I agree the Metacan shouldn't be given long term in combination with
prednisilone, however we are looking at a short term use to provide relief to an
elderly ferret for what appears to be an injury. It was felt the Metacam would be
less detrimental to him than a higher dose of pred due to his heart issues.
The pred and the Metacam can easily be hidden in his food. Also, there is
only the one strength of the liquid med available. There are two strengths
available in the pill form.
Is there a better anti-inflammatory for this specific case?
**i really do tend to avoid the combination, unfortunately, sometimes it is
the best drug. You might want to consider something like torbutrol, though,
which doesn't have the stomach issues, in future.
If giving metacam short term to a ferret that is also on pred, I would highly
recommend either an acid-blocker like Pepcid, Carafate, or both to help
protect the stomach from ulceration. Also make very certain to maintain hydration.
My preferred dose for Metacam is one drop per pound with food.
Sorry for not commenting earlier on this, I was out of town at a ferret show
this weekend.**
