I have a small 4 1/2 yr old ferret named Li'l Rocky. He has only been sick
one other time in his short life. About 4 oir 5 weeks ago we started to notice
he slept alot and seemed depressed. We had just put our ferret Nibbles to
sleep after he struggled a lot to survive. Nibbles and Rocky were my only 2
ferrets till about 4 months ago when we got a little girl kit. I thought maybe Rocky
was depressed from seeing Nibbles sick and then Rocky not knowing where he
went when we put him to sleep. But then I noticed he was going blind and about 3
weeks ago he went totally blind. He seemed to be doing ok at first, but now,
he doesnt know where he is or where he's going. He walks in circles and bangs
into things. Poor Li'l Rocky gets so upset. Now, the past week he seems frantic
and runs in circles and bangs into things. I'm not even sure if he recognizes
us. He also cries out sometimes or makes a weird crying noise sound. It
almost sounds like a cough or sneeze but its not. He will drink or eat and make
that weird noise (could be choking too). Last nite I heard a noise from his cage
and turned to find Li'l Rocky lying on his cage floor crying. I dont know if
he fell down or he couldn't go to the bathroom or what. I pulled him out quick
and held him for awhile (he pooped on my shirt while i was holding him). He
also seems hyper and seems to bob his head. I dont know whats wrong with him. I
thought he wasnt adjusting to the blindness well but now I know its more. It
almost seems neurological. I have a vet appm't tomorrow and if there is no help
for him my husband wants him to be put asleep immediately. After all, it's
his ferret and my husband feels he is suffering. I just didnt expect this and so
soon after losing my brave Nibbles. Anyone have any idea what this is? I'm
sorry for such a long letter. Thank you guys for your help.
