Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Discomfort passing stool
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

We have seen constipation with a few things. A large spleen can make passing difficult, and for that we use gentle massage following the ascending colon up the right side of the abdomen, the transverse across the upper abdomen, and then the descending on the ferret's left.

Certainly a bladder stone can cause constipation, even marked constipation and pain on defecating. We have encountered that twice with cystine stones; in fact, it was the first symptom seen. I would suspect that it would also show up with the more common struvite stones, or the rare uroliths of other natures.

If anything is restricting the room in the colon, or itself being pushed upon when things pass through the colon (pain not in the colon itself but from irritation caused by the colon pressing upon it when a bowel movement passes) you could see those symptoms.
