Debbie,
The important thing to remember about the dosage of pred is that you want to use the minimum dosage that is effective. Measure the effectiveness by testing his blood sugar with a glucometer used by diabetics. Testing can be done by rubbing a very thin coat of Vaseline on a toe pad and pricking it. Get a drop of blood up and put it on the test strip. I won't yell at you about the raisin but will offer some alternative ways to get your little guy to take his pred.
1. Grind your pill into a powder and mix with some chicken or turkey baby food. Baby food is a good high protein treat that will help stabilize his glucose level because of the way it is absorbed. If he has never eaten baby food before you may have to scruff and stuff him the first time or two but he will come to love it.
2. Grind it into a powder and mix with some Ferretone.
3. Have the vet give you liquid pred and mix with the baby food.
You can get a pill grinder at most of the larger drug stores, I happened to get mine at Walgreen's.
Please stay away from the raisins and all sugary or high carb treats. I would recommend that you feed him a diet that would be comparable to the diet of a person with hypoglycemia.
For step by step instructions on glucose testing with pictures go to http://www.unc.edu/~pjdutche/bloodsugar/, which is a link on www.miamiferret.org. I would also recommend that you read up on insulinoma on their site. It contains a wealth of information that you will find useful.
Good luck and keep us posted,
Jim
