Subject: [ferrethealth] blockage treatment
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Last Thursday my >1 year old male began projectile vomiting. At first it was brown
but then turned in to a bright red. I quickly took him to a vet who treats ferrets and
she took some x-rays. She found a small foreign body. She wasn't sure exactly
what the foreign object was but we decided to try to get him to pass it rather than
rush to surgery. We think it might have been a bit of Chew-Weasle stars (now
TRASHED!) Since then, we have fed him Gerber's chicken mixed with ground kibble
and a little ferretone 4 times a day. He also receives FerretLax 3-4 times a day and
Pepcid once a day. So far he has been recovering nicely. No more vomiting, he is
drinking/urinating and he does seem deficate on a regular basis. Poop color is
usually brown or greenish-brown. I have two questions: how long to I keep up the
soft diet and more especially how long do I keep giving FerretLax? He is a very
active, jumpy, crazy ferret and doesn't seem ill at all. He will not, however, eat his
dry kibble. He only eats the baby food mixture. Any thoughts?

[Moderator's Note: Cheweasels are made entirely of protein gelatin and very easily
dissolve in stomachs so it was not that.

Moderator's Question: have you been checking all of his bowel movements to know
when it passes and what it is?]
