It's now the wrong time of year, of course, but my husband was badly bitten by a
spider a couple of Christmases ago. In researching what sort of spider it might have
been (didn't see it happen, so we don't have a confirmed ID, but it caused necrotized
flesh and migraines and all that), we learned that poisonous spiders can hitch rides on
Christmas trees shipped up from the southern US (we live in Massachusetts). Since we
did indeed have a real tree that year, we suspect that's where his spider came from.
Just something to keep in mind--I suppose spiders could travel with any sort of
agricultural product.
