Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ferret diseases

According to a vet (last year, if memory serves) who has studied insulinoma the rate is unknown.

If memory serves, there have been some vet statements on the rate of adrenal disease they have encountered through the years which should be in the FML and FHL Archives, but they vary.

Besides those archives, I recommend checking
AFIP Ferret Pathology
http://www.afip.org/ferrets/index.html

It is now known from many careful veterinary research projects that factors such as being neutered and not getting enough complete darkness affect the rate of adrenal disease, and there are possible genetic vulnerabilities being studied.

If you look at individual homes the rates seem to vary from zero (some homes I know with whole ferrets or mostly whole ferrets, and one I know with neutered ferrets but with hurricane shutters and a room door that are used for about 14 hours in each 24 hours), to 100% (The person works nights in her home so there is almost always some degree of light and every ferret got adrenal disease.)

We personally have always had almost all neutered ferrets (only one a late neuter) but most of the time we have been able to provide enough darkness. There were two periods of a few years when serious human health problems made that impossible. The during-full-lifespan adrenal disease rate in our household over a quarter century has been about 30% with most of those occurring after one of the two periods when we could not provide a lot of darkness.
