Subject: [ferrethealth] Strange Allergic Reaction
I found my ferret sitting in an empty chinchilla cage while she was out pla=
ying (chinchilla currently kenneled in a recovery cage post op). She looked=
a bit too still for a 10 mos. old ferret and within minutes she was collap=
sed, turning bright red from her tail up her belly to her ears.. her ears, =
paws and face she swelled like a balloon. Her breathing started to slow and=
she began to gasp for air..I quickly administered benadryl which brought d=
own the swelling in minutes. I jumped in the car and headed to emergency ve=
ts with her paws still red but her face unswelling and her breathing resume=
d to normal. The Emergency Vets gave her a shot of dex and we had her on be=
nadryl every four hours through the night and morning. This was Saturday - =
She is fine. Her room is pet proofed. No vaccinations were given prior - n=
o change in anything prior...Other then some chinchilla treats or hay or pe=
llets the only other thing I can think she reacted to was left over cleaner=
from cleaning the chinchilla cage a couple of days previous (which I rinse=
d with water after using cleaner as I usually do). If she sniffed a hint of=
cleaner residue that was missed would she have had this allergic response?=
Is it possible to have such a response if she licked a chinchilla papaya t=
reat or ate a chinchilla food pellet. I am scared as heck to let her out of=
her cage in fear she will come in to contact with whatever it was again. I=
had never seen a reaction like this in my 13 years of owning ferrets. She=
tends to be a sneezy girl when I sweep and dust so I always thought she ha=
d more of a sensitivity or allergies so to speak.. any ideas or input or ex=
periences? I have an appointment with our regular vet and I wonder if it wo=
uld be extreme for me to ask for a shot of epinephrine for her if this happ=
ens again would benadryl still save her. Thank you for any experiences or i=
nput.
