Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma & Melatonin
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I was wondering if someone could share any info on side effects of melatonin as relate to Insulinoma or Pancreatic Tumors. On the 10/5/06 FML Sukie wrote: "Veterinary debate and study are ongoing because melatonin serves two opposing functions in the pancreas so it might help some or worsen some with either condition. Right now there is way too little data to know, so this is just a caution "in case" rather than hard data."

My little Nosette has been dealing with both Adrenal and Insulinoma for almost 3 years now. She's had surgery twice for insulinoma and both adrenal glands. More recently, she's on her second melatonin implant and lupron shot. While she's certainly not declining, she also doesn't seem to be getting better and I worry that nothing seems to be helping her (she's still loosing hair). My concern after reading Sukie's comment is that there is some indication that melatonin can have a negative affect on ferrets with insulinoma and if that is the case, then perhaps I should stop the melatonin (as it doesn't seem to be helping much anyway). I have posted on the FHL about her previously, after her second adrenal surgery when she was still exhibiting symptoms, and the vet said that in some ferrets, you just can't get it all out with surgery.

Thanks,
Moscha
