Subject: [ferrethealth] Post Adrenal Surgery Issues
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Just wanted to update you on Houdini's adrenal surgery.

His recovery is not going well so far.

He is approximately 3 years old and has food allergies to chicken, does not
like ferretvite nor nutrical.

He appears to have a GI bleeding (red not black blood) from the rectum and
his temperature is cool.

He had a left small tumor adrenal which was removed yesterday.

The time frame of the surgery was short and all appeared to be going well,
liquid nitrogen was used in part for the tumor removal. He was in a little
pain so he was given a small amount of pain medicine (torbol

I believe). He did pass a red bloody stool late in the day before he came
home with me so he was put on flagyl.

He passed another last night at home. He is on carafate, 0.70 ml clavamox,
and 0.23 flagyl.

He is lethargic but stirs and gets up to relieve himself. (Red blood is in
the stool and not the urine).

I spoke with the vet around 10pm concerned that he would only drink water
from the bowl, his temperature felt cool, his nose (usually pink) was pale.
His gums were still pink. She advised to give him 30cc lactated ringers
sub-Q, keep him warm and not try to force feed him and keep up the carafate.
I kept good watch over him and kept him warm as comfortable as possible. I
did manage to get the meds into him last night.

This morning he felt heavy and appears to be retaining fluids as he didn't
eliminate all the fluids I gave him.

His temp was still cool so I rushed him back to the vet this am.

He was placed back in the incubator to keep his temp up, was non-cooperative
when putting the IV back in

(a good sign I guess) so far. He is receiving supportive care at the vet's
office with fluids. The vet does not feel that he would be a good candidate
to open him back up given his present condition.

Please give any thoughts you may have and please keep him in your prayers.

Diane W.
