Subject: [ferrethealth] Cat food question
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Hi:
I have a little dilema I was hoping to get advise on:
I have two cats and eleven ferrets. The ferrets have their own room (slightly spoiled
rotten) which contains a huge food dish. The cats mainly eat in the gargage.
However, there are two other areas in the house that have communial food bowls
where the ferrets and cats eat when they are out playing. Since I can't stop the
ferrets and the cats from eating each others foods I usual mix the ferret food with
Eukenbia Cat Chicken and Rice (The Eukenbia scores high for ferrets on all the
comparison charts I've seen, plus it gives them some variety.)
Anyway, this worked fine until the price of the Eukenbia went up considerably. So
for the past month or so my mix has only been the premimum ferret food. BUT my
vet just told me that cats need Taurine or they can have heart problems. I don't see
this on my ferret food label. So my choices are:
1) Try to find another high quality cat food I can mix with the ferret food that meets
the ferrets requirements. (There aren't many.)
or
2) Separate the cat and ferret food, and not worry if they each get some of the other
food since it's only occasionally.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Lisa
[Moderator's Note; Also check with the ferret food manufacturer about the level of
taurine in the food. It is commonly added to ferret food, too, but I do not know if
the proportion is the same, and it may be included under a different ingredient
name which contains it in the ingredient list.]
