Subject: [ferrethealth] Swollen Spleen
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I brought my ferret Whitey to the vet for a swollen spleen a little
over a week ago. Hes almost 5 but has been in excellent health until
now. The Dr did an ultrasound but not a biopsy. 2 lymph nodes near
the spleen appeared swollen. Liver, pancreas and kidneys seem ok.
Blood work came back and red blood cells were around 23%, Platelets
were low and white blood cells were slightly low. There was also a
increase in billiruben?? I dont know the spelling on that
one...apparently it is a result of a breakdown of red blood cells.
We are treating this as am autoimmune disorder possibly
lymphosarcoma in the spleen? He has been on prednisone for about a
week. There has been no improvement and the swelling has increased.
Yesterday was a bad day and his nasal passages were plugged, he had
to breath out his mouth. Last night he was very feverish and I went
to bed not expecting him to be here in the morning. I woke up this
morning to find his temperature down and he seemed more alert. I dont have alot of experience with this..because we did not do the biopsy i feel like we are shooting in the dark. The vet felt like this was the right decision after seeing the bloodwork as it could have created complications with his platelets so low. The Dr really says she is nto sure what the problem is. Im just very anxious becuase what we are doing isnt effective and im watching his health deteriotate.
He sleeps a lot but he still gets perky and comes
running for his treats. I live in California where ferrets are
illegal and Im worried that he may not be getting the greatest of
care since due to the illegality vets here have limited exp. with
them. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions or
any info on meds that may help that I could suggest to my vet would
be great. I would like to keep him with me for a while longer if possible and his brothers and sisters agree.
Thanks
Frederick
