I suspect that the vet may have meant that there is a need for blood and perhaps adrenal surgery so the total could come out that high, but that either in your worry you missed that, or the vet thought that something had already been explained but it had not.

Ferrets are expensive medically. It is simply the norm for this particular animal.

Is the patch bilateral? How large is it? Are there sores? Do you know what type of bacteria were found? We had one who presented similarly who turned out to have an allergy and the skin sores were secondary. Until we were able to eliminate the allergen the skin sores were worsening. Once we found the cause and eliminated it he was fine. Allergies are very individual, though.

With two having problems have known causes of skin and other irritation been eliminated: cedar, things they scrape against, air deodorizers, fabric softeners, parasites including ones that leave and come back like bedbugs, fungi, etc.?
