Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Ferret with ulcers not doing very well
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Carafate NEEDS a time between it and food to work its best.

It also NEEDS to be separated from medications because it can interfere with some being absorbed.

In humans it was in recent years found that these spaces in time need to be longer in us than previously thought.

Your vet is using a medication combination that has been used for Helicobacter mustelae. H. mustelae infections often underlie ulcerations.

You will find that there is also now research which backs a hypothesis advanced several years ago, and to be found in a past Scientific American. Esophageal trouble and lower stomach troubles can have some opposing needs for treatment. This may be why lower stomach troubles and esophageal troubles tend to occur exclusive of each other.

Rather than getting the Carafate compounded may I suggest the liquid suspension form the manufacturer designed itself? Standard human pharmacies carry it, it is affordable, and the liquid medium is designed for optimal effect. Many vets don't know about this new med. We find that most ferrets here have accepted it very readily.

will be useful

Despite the ultrasound I would not rule out the possibility of prostate involvement. Please, see:

In addition, be sure to read this from 2 days ago in case the problem is not prostate:

Checking for uroliths, blood bacteria, urine pH, urine concentration, etc. simply make sense to be safest.
