Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Ferret with ulcers not doing very well
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

My vet prescribed Biaxin (Clarithromycin) in a form of a pedriatric suspension (trade name Klaricid in the UK). This has a fruit flavor and my Suki loves it and tries to lick it from the syringe before I can get it into her mouth. A big improvement on Flagyl.
It is possible if the ulcers are peptic ulcers that you should consider treatment for helicobacter mustela. You would need fecal samples to detect the bacteria and an experienced tech to know the difference from h. mustela and campylobacter. The are very similiar and distinguished by the number and position of the flagella.
For treatment options of h. mustela see "Biology and diseases of the ferret" (Fox) page 335
