Subject: [ferrethealth] some new general GI things
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Time will tell where they may or may not take us.

Three recent reasonably general things related to GI health which may interest some folks:

Upper:
a discovery was made that some of the meds which help reduce acid reflux have an antihistamine action, leading to speculation that this upper GI disorder may be at least partly an immune one. (This may be useful if a ferret or ferret line appears prone to esophageal problems.) I have to reconstruct where I found that. Ah: here is the topic (though not the same article) that was in the chain I was following then so if I can't find it at least people can start their own chain:

Lower:
Acid blockers can at times increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia and of lower GI tract infection (possibly useful for any species):

Lower (except in relation to one full GI tract disease):
This is human which differs from ferret, but it appears that there are genetics which are helpful for avoiding the human versions of diseases with bowel inflammation just as there are ones which increase that vulnerability, so perhaps there will be "genetics of health" answers to help ferrets if a receptor gene for IL-23 (interleukin-23) plays a role in inflammation for them, too, eventually, since it is the sort of finding for reducing inflammation that can lead to new drug category development:
