Subject: [ferrethealth] high gamma globulins/ ADV neg
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Hello All: =
My 2 year old ferret's spleen became very enlarged after an obstruction=
surgery last year; it grew to be "huge" and was pulling on his stomach, ca=
using him nausea and discomfort. We were able to manage with meds for thre=
e months, he started showing symptoms again in september. He is otherwise =
a very healthy and chubby ferret, but had mobility problems due to the larg=
e spleen. We did bloodwork pre- surgery- his total protein level was 10 an=
d he had very high gamma globulins- don't know the exact number, but it was=
high enough to cause concern. Our wise vet sent out an ADV test to Georgi=
a- which came back negative after what felt like a year of waiting. We know=
that this isn't the MOST accurate test available until the PCR comes back.=
He's a MF ferret who never goes outside unless he's going to the vet. He s=
hares a home with two other MF ferrets- who are getting bloodwork done next=
month to be tested for ADV as well. They are under two and in stellar heal=
th, so we haven't done bloodwork on them yet. =
His spleen was removed last week; the exploratory showed everything was=
normal; I think the vet used the word "perfect"- and that the spleen was H=
UGE. We sent the spleen out for biopsy and are sending splenic tissue for =
a PCR test to test again for ADV. I'm a bit confused though- I've been doin=
g research, and I'm thinking that if his gamma globulins were high he would=
be showing other symptoms or something else would be abnormal? Couldn't t=
he high total protein be from inflammation? We had just weaned him off the =
steroids when symptoms started again, then restarted him immediately after.=
He'd been on them for four days when bloodwork was done, after two weeks c=
ompletely off of them and two weeks before that only getting them every oth=
er day. Pre- surgery and once back on steroids, the spleen shrunk by 30% in=
three weeks. He's gaining normal winter weight and coat, and is recovering=
wonderfully from surgery- began eating and drinking on his own the next mo=
rning and has been getting more alert and frustrated with being cooped up s=
ince. Once he's recovered from the surgery, I'd like to repeat the bloodwo=
rk and get a more specific test for the protein. =
Are there any infections specific to the spleen? Would the spleen itself =
be throwing results off? Any other thoughts? Thank you!!! =
