Subject: [ferrethealth] Honking like a goose

For about a year and a half I have had one ferret who has an intermittent strange sound. It is NOT a normal ferret chortle, cluck, dook or any other sound they make either frequently or infrequently. It is NOT a cough, or hacking sound. It sounds like a human who has something stuck in the trachea, allowing air to pass by so it is possible to breathe, but not enough that it is possible to have a completely unobstructed airway.
This has been more frequent in recent months. Yesterday he woke up, ran out of the ferret room into the kitchen, stuck his head in a bag on the floor and honked like a goose! Ever had a kid with croup? That was similar to this sound. Loud, Honk Three times, each on an expiration. I was able to get a vet appointment for him and, of course, he never made any sound similar to it. He did make about three of the softer, previous sounds, but they were rather benign.
Last fall he had a chest x-ray which was normal. His heart sounds strong, regular and no abnormal lung sounds. Blood was drawn (BG was 58) and I will get results Tuesday. No films or other diagnostic yesterday because it was Sat. and they deferred them until a regular day so they would not have to charge me emergency fees. They were not concerned.
Sammy is 6.5 years old. He has always been healthy, but is starting to show signs of slowing down. He eats, drinks, poops and pees with no problems. He has normal poops one time and the next may be nasty diarrhea. He did a nasty diarrhea at the vet, and I must say that all of my ferrets have had this. Normal, then nasty.
Does anyone have any ideas what I should consider for differential diagnosis? As you know, I am not surrounded by great vet care and need to drive a couple of hours to get to it. We will follow up with the recommended tests, but the vet is in the dark. Hope to know more when we get the bloodwork.
