To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I also have a 4 year old ferret with a partially collapsed
trachea...........we are NOT definite about this and it started right after
his surgery for neutering. He was neutered along with an additional ferret
who was much bigger than this one and it is suspected that the vet used the
same size intubation tube on both of them, the one used on my boy was a bit
too large, causing the problem. Keep in mind that he NEVER had this problem
before surgery and was then thought to be a "cold" and lasted for a long
time with daily "honking". After 3 years, it has progressively subsided -
we gave him 2/10 ml. of Robitussin DM and it DID take away the honking in
short time. I could give it to him twice a day as necessary. It DID work.
My present vet said the only way to prove the partially collapsed trachea
was to do endoscopy but she thought that might do more damage. He only
does it once in a great while now but I do keep the Robitussin on hand for
honking during the night.........mainly for my own benefit!!
