Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] melatonin - oral vs implant ques
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi again, I only got one reply on this (thank you), but just in case anyone one can help explain this further to me, as I am confused (this is in regards to preventing adrenal disease).

If the Ferretonin implant, which you are suppossed to give twice a year, contain 5.4mg of melatonin...

>Ferretonin implants containing 5.4 mg. (11.8%) Melatonin )N-Acetyl-5->methoxytryptamine)

... why if you opt to do the oral pill version of melatonin..... Why are you suppossed to give 1 mg per day, all year long?

If anyone can explain this to me, I would really appreciate this... and so would my ferrets! :))

Thanks,
Andrea

Hi everyone, I've read and heard of many people using melatonin as a preventative for adrenal disease, and I have a couple of questions.

If the implants are given twice a year at spring and fall, why then do people give oral melatonin all year long? I realize that the implants are slow releasing (forget the technical term for that!)... but is the amount of oral melatonin given daily (1 mg), the same amount that is
given in an implant over the 6 month time span? Otherwise, why would I be giving it to them all year long?

Are there any studies done on using this as a preventative? Like are there any long-term effects? How long have people been doing this for?

Also, is the 1 mg pill the correct dosage? After reading on the bottle,

I did check the archives, and I couldnt find any info on studies on preventative measures. I'm just looking for any updated info that anyone may have. The reason I'm asking is that, I have an adopted 4 1/2 yo male, River, who had his left adrenal out almost 2 yrs ago now (almost 6 mths after I adopted him), and I want to do what I can to prevent his right gland from becoming affected. I also have a 1 1/2 yo female...
is she too young to start on melatonin preventative? Thank you all so much!

Thank you,
Andrea
