Subject: Fwd: Re: [ferrethealth] melatonin - oral vs implant ques
To: Andrea Rose <brascoben@yahoo.com>, ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

HI ANdrea,

I am getting confused about whether you are receiving posts?
AS mentioned earlier on list The oral dose daily melatonin MUST be given evrey day
as it wears off at the end of 24 hrs -- it is the needed amount of melatonin for the
day.
The implant like we use at the shelter is a slow releasing dose which ( according to
Mr Melatek- Tim Cairns) is about a 4 mg dose which will stay at 4 mg if repeated
every 4mos otherwise the doseage tapers down.

As a preventative ( for ferrets not having hyper adrenal problems) - the ferretonin
should be given every 6 mos

as a therapeutic dose ( for ferrets displaying adrenal symptoms) it is best to impant
every 4 mos or 3 times a year.
