This is very interesting, and could be very helpful.

I have been meaning to post something informational to this list for a while, and just haven't taken the time to do it.

I now have a ferret that is diabetic. She had insulinoma surgery last APril, and had a portion of the pancreas removed. In July, she went diabetic very suddenly.

We are using the new insulin that was discussed in Toronto at Ferret Aid 2006. It is called Lantus (glargine insulin). We (myvet and I) have found it to be very good. Ilsa (my ferret) gets an injection of 1 unit once a day, and her BG has remained very steady. She did have a slight problem about a week ago, when she became sick with a stomach problem. Her BG got a little low, and we had to back off the insulin for a few days. But, once she recovered from that, we went back to the i unit, and she is now back at 100%.

Also, when she first turned diabetic, my vet recommended I get a home glucose monitoring system to use with her. There is now a veterinary home glocose monitoring system made by Abbott called the AlphaTRAK. Here are 2 links to information on it.

I thought it would be good to have this information in the archives, in case other need it.

The AlphaTRAK is extremely accurate - my vet also has one and tested it against both his office equipment and the lab he uses. It is very similar to the Abbott Free Style, and uses a very small blood sample.
