Subject: [ferrethealth] Oral Melatonin - Doubts
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

I=B4m from Brazil and we do not have melatonin here, so we have to
purchase it from the USA, which is very complicated but we=B4ve been
managing to get it. Our only option is to use the oral melatonin, as
we do not have the implants. I=B4ve been using it for about a year on
my two ferrets (both have had one adrenal removed), but have some
doubts due to readings all over the web:

1 - One of my ferrets is 6 yo and she has recently started showing
the adrenal symptoms again: advanced hais loss and swallen vulva.
For a year she=B4s been stable, but in the last few weeks symptoms are
stronger. Until last week I was giving her 2mg daily, now I changed
to 3mg. How much can I give her at most?

2 - If a ferret receives the oral dose of melatonin daily, and
suddenly stops receiving it, what could happen? Could the
interruption actually make the disease worse? Would it be better to
lower the dose day by day before interrupting it, or never even
interrupting it?

3 - A ferret with obvious adernal symptoms but vets can not
determine which is the ill adrenal, therefore no surgery will be
made by now. If this ferret starts receiving melatonin daily, wouldd
this make things worse, as both adrenals are still there? Is the
dosage in this case lower than usual?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Helio
