Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Blood in Urine, No Bacterial Growth
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Leann,

This is a long shot, but my very first ferret, Sonic, had a fairly
similar problem. Her urine looked brown and was +++ blood. We did
treat for infection, but that didn't fix anything. She had some odd
urine pH stuff going on too, but I'm not sure how that really factored
into this.

Anyway, this continued until her death from other causes. Upon
necropsy, it was found that she had a tumor along her urinary tract,
maybe as far down as the vagina, although I don't remember for sure.
It extended through many layers of tissues, hard to say where it
originated. Its pathology was "vascular hamartoma" and it was
described as a "a large varicose venular lesion." When she would
urinate, the tumor would bleed, resulting in the bloody urine. This
explains why urine removed directly from her bladder did not contain
blood, yet urine in all caught samples had large amounts of blood
present. The blood was originating from between the bladder and the
vulva.

Once again, probably a long shot, but your post jogged my memory about
this oddball finding.

Best wishes,
-Pam S.
