Subject: [ferrethealth] adrenal disease/ melatonin implants
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, My name is Lisa and this is my first post here. My ferret Bell
was diagnosed with Adrenal disease. The problem is that her
original vet prescribed her Mitotane, which after some research, I
refused. This was the only treatment she offered for this disease.
Took her for a second opinion, and he basically said he wouldn't do
anything for her unless I had the $168 university of Tenn blood test
done. When I mentioned melatonin implants and Lupron depot shots he
shook his head from side to side and said "surgery." They told be
it has been a while since he has done one of these surgeries, and
the last know price was $500, but since its been so long, the price
would be higher. Obviously the fact that it's "been a while", along
with the whole complete bad vibe I got from him, I was practically
running out of there. I called a third vet who said surgery was
$750-950, which I can't afford, but didn't offer the melatonin
inplants. They said they would call back with a referral within 24
hours, but never have. Fourth, I emailed a shelter I found online,
the only one under a 3 hour drive from my house, only to find out
afterwards that they are in the process of closing. I'm totally at
the end of my rope and keep hitting deas ends. In the least, I
would like to get Bell the melatonin implants and possibly Lupron
depot. What can I do when I can't find a vet who offers these?
Right now I am giving her the 1 mg melatonin tablets, once a day,
around 9 hours after sunrise. Obviously, the implant is more
ideal. It's probably stronger, and more reliable. I'm very worried
about being able to keep up every single day with the time thing.
Eventually something is going to come up where I am unable to be
home at the correct time. Can anyone help me with anything.....
information, addresses , phone numbers...ect Bell is still a very
young ferret, she'll be 2 on 1/3/07 . I want to at least slow down
the progression of this disease.

Thanks
