Subject: [ferrethealth] Dealing with ferret cancer, a long road to travel...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi There,

I am new to this board but can't tell you how excited I am that I
found this group! My husband and I have ferrets, (same old story...
started with one and then got him a girlfriend, and then got
another... you know ferret math!) but unfortunately we had 3 losses
this year.

About 10 days ago we noticed are ferret Xander (Edward Alexander- he
is our wonder ferret!) was breathing very hard and so my husband took
him to the vet. I must give our vet credit because he came out and
said that he didn't know, so he sent us to a specialist at one of the
top vet med hospitals in the nation. After may tests, they found
Xander had a large tumor in the chest cavity, and wanted to proceed
with a CT scan. They did however let us know that his chances in
surviving this was not in our favor. We got a call letting us now
that the mass was taking up 90% of his chest cavity and that it was
amazing he was even alive, since his heart and lungs only had 10% of
the chest cavity to function. They then wheeled him to emergency
surgery, (and while his chances of making it through were less than
50%) he made through fine and the surgeon successfully removed this
HUGE mass.

We have since found that the mass is lymphoma and my Xander the wonder
ferret is receiving chemo treatment. It is a 27 week process and we
have to make a long drive one a week for the next 7 months. We have
certainly spent a lot of money (hello debt!) but when I look at how
well Xander is doing and how bright eyed he is again I just know it
was the right thing to do!

Has anyone else been through the chemo treatments????? I went through
them with family members but never my furkids. I am not sure what to
really expect and I am not sure what else I can do for Xander to make
sure this is treatment suceeds as much as possible.

Thanks
A Mama Ferret.....
Lady Caliph
