There is a type of material for the cage that is made from recycled paper, where all inks or dyes have been removed. We used to use it. Also, giving them a place to sleep that is not directly on the cage bottom is a good thing. There are many styles and types of ferret beds available, or else just take some old t-shirts, towels, etc. and make a section of the cage the 'bedroom'.

Also, you mention that an ear infection is a possibility. Ferrets get ear mites. They almost all have them. Their ears must be cleaned regularly. There is special ear cleaning solution to do this, available at any decent pet store.
