Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: vaccines and titers??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our vet can do titers but admitted (last year so things may have changed) that there is still
not full knowledge of how to interpret titers in this case.

What we do with our vet's blessing is after kithood and kit series, we vaccinate every 18
months for Canine Distemper, and every 12 months for rabies. That removes 1/3 of the
exposures so decreases the risk of reactions. Actually, I don't think we have had any
ferrets react to canine distemper shots since we began this spacing. Yes, just looked: no
reactions here since going to an 18 month spacing (except for one who developed an
allergy to Amoxi -- very unusual in ferrets).

The reason we have not gone to 2 years is because back when the vaccines available were
Fervac and Galaxy there was a family sent to our then vet (who moved out of state when
he married) who had CDV in their ferrets. None of the young ones (who had not had
vaccinations beyond kithood) survived, but some older ones who the person described to
the treating vets as having been vaccinated "2 or 3 years" beforehand survived but had
serious neural damage. So, in case, it really was 2 years, and in case it would also be the
case for current vaccines we don't go as long as 2 years between.

Now, if we had a major CDV outbreak locally and were coming up to a year or past it I
think we'd make an exception and vaccinate immediately.

(Ours recently had their vaccinations, BTW. Oh, and so far, so good with HIlbert. He is
being watched, but if there is any adrenal disease (instead of follicle damage from his past
severe dermal allergy or a new allergy) it is not making itself known, yet. Hilbert broke a
canine on the carry cage on the way to the vet's, though it is not a bad break and we are
watching that, too.)
