Don the question is not whether the meter is calibrated correctly, but rather if the meter can successfully read an accurate BG level for a specie for which the meter was not intended. It is my understanding that some meters read as much as 20 points higher than shown by tests designed for ferrets, while others read low and still others read accurately.

I can not say for sure that all meters, if calibrated as designed, will give an accurate readout of a ferret's BG. So to check a meter's accuracy - make sure it is properly calibrated; then take it with you to test you ferret's BG via an appropriate venue, such as lab testing or vet's BG meter.

Better safe than sorry.

FYI...using a human blood glucose tester is meant to be a guide/tool from
day to day. The easiest thing to do to see if the meter is working correctly
is use it on yourself and if the reading comes back close to what is normal,
then it should be fairly accurate for the ferret (there is also calibration
fluid for most meters to test their functioning). I have always used the
OneTouch meters and they have been quite close to the tests given in my vets
office. That being said, a meter should never replace proper testing by a vet.
In this instance it was suggested for use over the weekend while a vet was not
available.
