Subject: [ferrethealth] New Insulinoma diagnosis
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone, I'm new to posting but have read the archives in the past.

Milo, my 7 year old female, was just diagnosed with insulinoma.
Currently she's on .45ml prednisolone, twice a day. We'll be going
back to the vet in a few days to check her glucose levels, and adjust
her dose over the next little while.

This past summer, we lost our 5.5 year old male Buddha after a partial
pancreas removal. He had been quite sick with insulinoma and we
decided surgery was the best option. Basically, he just didn't
recover from the surgery, likely because we took him off the
prednisone to avoid the risk of an infection.

After losing Buddha so quickly after surgery, DH & I are both against
surgery for treating Milo. She's also older and has been showing
early signs of heart disease, so I don't know that her health would be
able to hold up to surgery. Anyway, aside from pred, what are our
other treatment options? I'll also be talking with our vet (who is
very experienced with ferrets), but I'm just looking for more
information.
