A number of people alernatively buy sand box sand from toy stores and use that. Some put
flat bricks underneath to also wear down claws naturally.
Dr. Lewington is a ferret vet and fungi in digging medium can pose concerns for ferrets.
They can be inhaled, ingested, get in eyes or ears, etc. Potting mixes are designed to hold
moisture and that also allows fungi to better set up house.
Better to have the potting soil for plants and use safer alternatives for dig boxes.
Make sure that you have easy access to the box because at some point one will try it as a
litter box and you will need to clean it and replace contents.
Tip: never use ammonia to clean a spot where you don't want ferrets to go to the bathroom
because it smells like a urine signal that says "Go here."
