Some fungi when inhaled can set up in the lungs and cause nasty respiratory problems.
Others can cause other disease.

Digging is an activity which takes the spores airborne locally.

Mycotic Diseases (fungal diseases in ferrets) have their own chapter (Chapter 17) in _Biology
and Diseases of the Ferret_

Diseases covered there include:
Blastomycosis ( which grows as both a yeast and a mold) and occurs in soil
Coccidiomycosis, also found in soil
Cryptococcis , also found in soil
Histoplasmosis, also found in soil (and is also a disease found at times in hunting ferrets)
Pneumocystis,
and an assortment of superficial mycoses
