Just please be careful of two things with rice.

If they get it in their sinuses or stomachs, it will take on
moisture and expand. This could cause a problem (note, I did not
say WILL cause a problem, because I don't know), so just be aware.

Secondly, depending on where you live, rice can draw pests. For
instance, in Florida, where I am, we have a real issue with insects,
especially ants and roaches - even the cleanest house has to fight
these critters on a regular basis.

As long as you're aware of these things, rice can be a good choice.
Personally, due to the pests issue, we chose playground sand for our
digging box, but it is much harder to clean off the little critters
than rice would be.
