I live in Florida and have had no problem with pests in our rice.

On another note, I have been warned (by vets and other shelter operators)
against using anything super fine like sand because there is a much greater
chance that it could get in the nasal passages and one grain of sand could cause
big problems.

Rice being ingested and expanding would only be a concern if your ferret was
eating it. Out of dozens of ferrets we have never had one that saw the rice
as enticing.

Regarding the possibility for exposure to outside elements such as viruses,
bacteria, allergens...we must be aware that most of our ferrets live very
sheltered lives and go outside of the home rarely. Their limited exposure does
make them more susceptible.
