I think many people are confusing potting mix/soil with soil. Potting
mix/soil contains addititives I would never let my guys play in, but
organic soil that I've used for years is just that - ORGANIC with no
chemicals and SOIL with no perlite or peat moss or anything else but DIRT.
Having asthma and many allergies (my friends joke I need a bubble to
live inside OR outside.), I have never had any breathing difficulties
myself. I would attribute this to 2 practices:
1) the dirt/sand box is well ventilated. It's a tall box so either
the lid was off or if the lid was on, I used a lid with a huge hole
cut in it (for access and ventilation).
2) I would religiously change the soil/sand mix out for a fresh mix
every single year.
They made a mess but they loved the box to death. ^.^
