Boy that subject is a bit complicated. My vet likes to try to wean ferrets off of steriods if and when possible too and yes that makes sense. While these meds do help.. they cause a certain amt of deadly circumstances, over time, themselves.

One reason a ferret would have to remain on a steriod is because of the MANY tiny tumors that remain on and in the pancreas after large ones are removed. If there are enough tumors, whether large enough and located to be easily seen or not the BG can still need help being maintained at a healthy level. If there are no tiny tumors causing BG problems or if the tumors present do not interfer with healthy levels of BG, then it makes sense to wean your ferret off of the steriod. If you are lucky enough to be able to wean your ferret you will still have to have regular BG tests done to monitor him for the rest of his life for what I hope are obvious reasons. JMO

Hope somehow that helped.

Vicki

Hello to all:

I have written here about our 4 year old Neo before, and have received many helpful emails from new friends. Neo has a fairly large tumor that appears to be on his pancreas and he has been diagnosed with insulinoma that has been progressing fairly rapidly. I've had to increase his dosages of azium and proglycem lately, but otherwise he's been doing okay, and his ulcers also seem to be clearing up. I met last week with a vet who has good experience with surgery for insulinoma, and Neo will be going in to have the tumor removed, as well as part of the pancreas, on Monday. He won't know how much of the pancreas must be removed until he sees it.

My question is this: After surgery, what has been the experience of others with either continuing or not continuing meds for insulinoma? Most of what I've read is that ferrets should continue on a regular dose of Pred for the rest of their lives after the surgery, but my vet said he prefers to try to take them off the meds after surgery and recovery. So, I'm a bit in limbo as far as what will be best for Neo. Any help based on similar experiences would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff and Neo
