Subject: [ferrethealth] Enriching ferret play time hard to do?!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I can't believe what a can of worms I opened in asking about the
potting soil! wow. Needless to say, I have since removed the soil
from the dig box (they only used it once for about 20 min) because I
tend to air on the side of caution. The perlite in it was a source of
concern for me, as well as the possiblity of mold growth, which
happens more than I would like to admit in my house given where I
live! I have since decided to put long grain rice in the box (not
instant). Please note that I intend to supervise their play to ensure
their is no ingestion. If this looks to be a problem, no box. I think
out of all the choices for things to put in the box for digging, rice
is the safest (albeit, it has its concerns, as people have pointed
out).
I am just a bit saddened by the feeling I have been getting from
reading all of the posts I somewhat spawned. It is hard to enrich
ferret play time! Every toy for a ferret has risks. Even play
tubes...which seems to be the thing everyone says to use instead of a
dig box. I have lots of play tubes for my babies. But that isn't
enough! I rotate toys, but even that gets old. There just isn't a
whole lot of things that hold their interest. I just wanted to offer
them something different that lets them be ferrets. Not for every
day, just a speacial treat once in awhile. They deserve that. I think
the key to anything is supervision of use and knowing your ferret so
you can tell if something is wrong. Ferrets are fuzzy two year olds.
More people die in auto accidents every year than cancer. But does
that mean you can't drive your two year old anywhere. Of course not.
You do the best you can to be safe, and that is all you can do. Kids
or ferrets (which are my kids in this case!) can be sheltered from
all harm. That is just life.
