How many people have had experience with this in their ferrets? I had a very large male- he is 6
months old- 4 pounds, and he was fine the day before, playing with everyone, and the next day he
wouldn't get up at all. I took him to the vet immediatly, as he was also swollen up and she
suspected a blockage, although she could not feel one on palpatation, she x-rayed him- nothing
showed. She then ran Barium on him- nothing. I took him home, kept him in bed with me all night as
he literally could not move- he was eating his recipie, but not pottying, and not willing to eat
or drink on his own. I sub-q'd him all night, and got him back to the vet the next day- he was
swollen up about 10 times worse, she said. She x-rayed again- nothing. More Barium, blood panel
was normal- no blockage, but she opened him up to be safe- nothing, except his lymph nodes were
huge. She said it is ileus, and that it is viral and that it was probably from a new ferret we
took in, although no one else is ill or showing any symptoms at all. She said he would have to
work through it, put him on Metoclopromide and Amoxi, and sent him home. Four days later he is up
and playing and feeding himself and seems much better. I understand what Ileus is, although no one
seems to be able to tell me why it occurs or if it is recurring, or why he got sick when out of 11
ferrets no one else is even lethargic. I have younger ferrets, older ferrets and more medically
compromised ferrets. Any thoughts from anyone would be helpful!!
