Well, the important things, of course, for ANYTHING are to
1. know both the upsides and downsides because usually both exist
and
2. to always be forthcoming with the treating vet so that possible causes of disease don't
get missed or delayed in being diagnosed.

Examples:

Climbers like our Morney sometimes can fall. In case of symptoms that look like that be
sure to mention if the individual is a climber, and try to make the places where climbing
happens be a bit more safe. Yes, some people will wonder why cushions or pillow cases
hung from cord are where they are, but who cares?

Some ferrets are even more inclined to eat what they shouldn't so when symptoms fit for
that as a possible cause the vets should know.

For the soil (including dirt) it pays to know which infections can be gotten and that the vet
knows about the digging in case matching diseases show up. Let's face it, even with
marbles bought in bulk and added the digging of potted plants still happens sometimes.
Oh, and try to make sure that any potted plants they can reach are not poisonous ones.
There are links in this website to help on that score.

For creeks (and even aquariums) giardia is sometimes a concern, so if symptoms arise
which could be that let the vet know where they play.

The list could go on and on. Knowing both sides before making a choice, and being frank
with vets if a choice goes wrong is just part of life for everyone. Nothing is perfect.
