Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma surgery
To: "FHL" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

When my Spike had the insulinoma operation, it happened as a sort of
emergency operation, I didn't have time to prepare. Spike had his
operation, was put on a glucose drip and had pain medication and
antibiotics, prednisolone was stopped. 24 hours after the operation I took
him back to the vets to have his BG measured and it was over 400 mg/dl so
the drip was removed and obviously I didn't give any more pred. My vets
advised me to observe him rather than measure the BG daily and Spike didn't
show symptoms of low BG anymore. 5 days after the operation we went back to
the vets and Spike had his BG measured again and it was a lot higher than
before the op, still lower than normal but much better and stable. And
Spike's been stable since, no more wobbly spells or falling over. He is a
lot more active and playful, still off the pred, too. I know I should
measure his BG more regularly and will do but he is acting so normal that
I'm sure he's got a pretty normal BG. I guess every case is different, some
ferrets don't need pred after the operation, some do. You will find out
when you measure and observe the BG after the op.

My question is this: After surgery, what has been the experience of others
with either continuing or not continuing meds for insulinoma? Most of what
I've read is that ferrets should continue on a regular dose of Pred for the
rest of their lives after the surgery, but my vet said he prefers to try to
take them off the meds after surgery and recovery. So, I'm a bit in limbo as
far as what will be best for Neo. Any help based on similar experiences
would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff and Neo
