Subject: [ferrethealth] Ileus
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have had a couple of ferrets with Ileus. The first ferret we did a
barium series on. I was convinced he had a GI foreign body, but
nope. We gave him a shot of Torb ( Butorphanol) to help him relax and
get comfy as well as promote GI motility. I don't recall him ever
having another episode. I currently have a ferret that has gone
through episodes that acts like "bloat". The radiographs were really
quite something to see with gastric distension that I did't think
could be acheived by a ferret!! He presented with vomiting, bloated
belly and lethargy. I gave hime Torb and SQ fluids at home. ( I am a
vet tech and work in a surgery department). Within a couple of hours
he felt better and wanted to eat again. The culprit for him is if I
happen to make the chicken gravy a little too thick. It comes out
looking exactly as it did going in. :-) He has had this happen on 3
seperate occasions so at least now I know what it is and what might
trigger it. Hope this helps!
