Subject: [ferrethealth] Potting mix etc

Hi Vicky,
You certainly write a lot!
I've had ferrets since 73 in Perth WA. and have seen 3 ferrets with
cryptococosis since 97. Cases have been recorded in Sydney, NSW,
Wisconsin, USA and British Columbia, Canada.
Like some other infections possible in ferrets the fungus C
Neoformans etc is considered rare but when it occurs in one's own
ferrets it is no longer rare! It is a very distressing time for ferret
and owner i know from experience.
Spores can last in soil and bird droppings for some time. So I don't
see the wisdom of bringing soil, potting mix or whatever into the house
if a lot of ferret owners keep their pets indoors.
The disease might well be rare but the consequences are deadly and the
prognosis guarded.I think bringing soil into the house could be asking
for trouble at some time. Forewarned is forarmed in some situations.
Prevention is better than cure in all things infective. Treatment can
be expensive and long on drugs. You have probably seen that with
Adrenal Gland Disease and Insulinoma in pet ferrets.
Cheers, John
