Subject: [ferrethealth] Considering Surgery For Insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello to all:
I am new to this list, and would appreciate some direction from
anyone who might be able to help me find an experienced ferret
surgeon in the Connecticut area. Our 4 year old male Neo has been
diagnosed with insulinoma, and it seems to be progressing rapidly.
He is currently on .8 ml of Proglycem daily and .6 ml of azium
daily. These are administered together, once every eight hours,
with these daily dosages divided into thirds. He is also on meds
for ulcers (amixicillin, carafate, famotidine). His appetite is
excellent and we feed him 5 times a day, with a blend of ground up
Totally Ferret kibble, duck soup mix, a little slippery elm bark
powder, and some FerretVite mixed it. We add water to make a gruel
out of it and serve it slightly warmed.
The meds alone aren't helping a whole lot, as Neo is still very
lethargic, and his BG levels remain in the 30's. He will be having
an ultrasound done in two days, and that may help find a tumor or
tumors. We are considering surgery to remove pancreatic tumors if
they are found, as well as part of the pancreas, since Neo is only 4
years old and should have plenty of life left, if not for this
disease.
Our vet is the best ferret vet that I can find in the area, and
was recommended by a woman who owns a local ferret shelter.
However, our vet has done only 3 surgeries for insulinoma in his
entire career of about 20 years, and one of those three ended badly
due to infection. SO, I am trying to find more experienced and
qualified ferret surgeons in or around Connecticut. If anyone has
any names that they could recommend, or any links to websites that
would help find a surgeon to speak with, then it would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks very much.
Jeff and Neo
