I'm in Florida and recently lost Sammy to cryptococcus. I have no
idea how he got it but it was diagnosed thru pathology. I don't
know his background before he came to me. His friend, Crystal, who
came with him, has shown no signs of the disease. He suffered from
respiratory-like symptoms for about two years before the lesions (?)
started appearing. We never could figure out what was causing the
respiratory problems. The lesions were biopsied, and that's when
cryptococcus was diagnosed. It's not a pretty disease at all. My
vet had never seen it in any animal, and recently had a cat
diagnosed with it also. So, it's out there and it's spreading. It
used to be pretty much confined to the midwest. After having seen
what Sammy suffered through, as well as photos a couple of others
from this list sent to me, I wouldn't personally take the risk.
I've had probably 45-50 ferrets over the years, and this is my first
case, but it's still not worth the risk, IMO.
