There are some opiates which help with intestinal motility. I've one of
the reasons beyond pain control that some are useful short term after
abdominal surgery.

What the mechanism is (mechanisms are?), I do not know. On a quick look at
opiates +motility
a LOT comes up but I don't have time to sort through them, I'm afraid.

It looks like there are mechanism for both increasing and decreasing
intestinal motility, so it may be a very careful balancing act.

Hopefully, someone who knows why they work will reply, but meanwhile
you can try that search combo.

I remember that a clean heroin addict told me back in the early 70s that
the GI effect of that drug on humans is horrid diarrhea followed by terrible
constipation, so that when he was using he was pretty much always in
intestinal pain from one or the other, but I don't know anything about the
nuances of that or other opiates, though a quick skim of resources looks
like the effects may vary with types of opiates, duration of use, and dose.
